older games worth playing for cheap?

Hi all,

What older games are worth playing - cheap required.

And a second question - I still own (if I can find it) the original half life. Is there any way I can download the game for free seeing as I already own it? I was going to re-buy it from steam thinking it would be a couple quid, but its £7. Still not much I know, but seeing as I already own it...

So I used to own half life and deux ex 18 years ago - i'd like to play those again or something similar.

Never got into the AAA shooters like doom - need a bit of strategy/puzzle element to it.

Also used to like simulation games. I didn't own many PC games because back then I only had a budget pc - no gpu. But the iGPU i have now temporarily should storm those oldies.

I already have RCT3.
 
X-com enemy within, when you get bored with it (get at least a couple of plays under your belt, play again with second wave options only after completing) add the long war mod.
If you like it, there's a lot of game time covered with that :D

Ah thanks i might try that one. Reminds me of a game i used to have called commandos where you controlled soldiers from a top down view.

Its not cheap though - £20. I was kinda after older cheaper games to pass the time with. I don't have a proper GPU yet.

Was just going to mention that, some games will last forever if you get the right mod and actually enjoy the higher skill level.

Battlefield 2 is another one. The later versions are no good in this respect because EA felt threatened by the popularity of the modded versions and do not allow this except to paying developers.
I know hundreds still play online massive battles upto 100 players on the bf2 engine. Being so ancient, an old nvidia GTX should cover it
Again this game can last forever, so it has to be one of the cheapest games out there

CSGO is basically a free game. TF2 literally is, its funded by people opening cases but I dont think its pay to win. Contagion seemed good when I tried it, lfd2 obviously

You used to be able to register the old CD Keys for Half-Life/Opposing Forces/Blue Shift via Steam's enter a code section (forget the actual name), and then it would add them to your steam games and download the current updated version.
 
Dungeon Keeper 2 was fantastic and should be played by everyone.
System Shock 2 - again fantastic and you've just missed out on GOG giving it away free of charge
Torchlight is a great Diablo clone and can be bought for a few quid (there's also a sequel)
Unreal Tournament I still enjoy now and still actually looks okay (instagib CTF is great fun)
Chronicles of Riddick is great fun - massively under rated game. If you get Dark Athena you get the first one with better graphics (Escape from Butcher Bay) which is great value especially as EFBB is the better of the two

Other games I'd recommend depending on your preference:
The Longest Journey
Vampire the Masquerade
Beyond Good and Evil
Grim Fandango (remastered)
Secret of Monkey Island 1/2 (remastered)

Should keep you busy for a bit :)

That was a great game, I wouldn't mind playing it again at some point. A modern sequel or even a remake would be awesome (imagine that game with VR).

Yes the first Riddick game was amazing. I remember playing it on the first Xbox and being in awe of the graphics :D

I don't know if anyone has recommended Warcraft 3, but in terms of older games it doesn't get much better than that. Should be very cheap these days, the single player is very good and lasts quite a while, and I think it still has a strong online community. And of course it gave birth to the whole MOBA genre through modding.
 
Half Life has a remake out (unofficial, official type) which is good fun, and not too expensive :).

It comes up regularly on humble bundle so you'll get that and a bagload of other firaxis games (Civ etc) pretty cheap. Keep your eye out :D

Also, it's only a fiver on cdkeys.com for a steam key (I use em for pretty much everything now, no issues)

The original X-com (1996 :p ) is probably closer to commando's from the sound of it. This is a BIT more slick/arcade-y but there's definitely depth. It's easily my highest regarded game (X-com:EW+long war). The base game is... relatively easy. Long war is extremely unforgiving :D
