Hello, I have an older i5 Intel processor , I belive the MOBO its in is broken so bought a new MOBO which said i3/i5/i7 compatible is MSI no thrills.

Went to move the processor into new one and it didn't fit? I've never done this before. But it removed smoothly from the old MOBO.

So i expected it to fit smoothly into the new one. It didn't fit and i didn't want to force it!

Am i doing something wrong? or is an older i5 a differant size from a new one?

Older i3/i5/i7 CPU's were socket 1156 and new ones are socket 1155, very similar (even use same heatsink) but different.

(some older i7's were socket 1366 and some newer ones are socket 2011, but this is pretty redundant info as you have an old i5 so it will be 1156)

*Edit*

to clarify, i5 6x0/7x0 series are 1156, i5 2xx0/3xx0 series are 1155, but the chips only fit in the sockets one way so if you have the right motherboard you may just need to rotate it.

Maybe and Yes. Are the two CPUs, the new one and the old one the same physically?

There are socket 1156 and 1155 AFAIK. Check on wikipedia to which you have, there should be photos.

what is you mobo model number and what is the CPU?

EDIT: ninja'd

ahh thanks for the advice. I'd imagine i do have the older one. I tryed rotating nothing would work.

I purchased the MOBO as it said i3/i5/i7 compatible in big letters across top. And was a cheap MSI for £30 but it di what i need it to until i replace it.

Do you i think i have grounds to take the MOBO back for refund/exchange?
