Oldie - Socket A 'Thunderbird' core CPU temperatures

My mates just got hold of an old socket A 'Thunderbird' core CPU which he's using to build a file server. Its the 1.1 Ghz model so it should be plenty powerful enough for the job.

We noticed that it idles at between 43 and 47 using a factory AMD cooler (everything running at stock speed). Initially I thought that this was a bit high, but I also seem to remember that these old CPUs ran quite hot. If anyone can confirm this it would be helpful before we go about investigating if there may be a problem somewhere.

Heh mine used to idle in the 50s sometimes in the summer mate. AMD specs expect a load temp of around 65C to be average, judging from your idle temps you're doing fine.
 
yes the do run quite hot. i got a 1.4ghz thunderbird running at 45c ish with low load in a server i built. load temps don;t go over 55c so its not too bad. its got a thermaltake silent boost on it.

best cooler for those chips is either a thermaltake big typhoon, if its got mobo socket mounts, second best cooler is a gigabyte g-power cooler, im not sure though if they still make them with the socket A clip though so do shop around.
 
Cheers guys, pretty much confirms what I thought.

Judging by some of the temperatures you had with yours we seem to be doing quite well so I think we'll probably just leave it as it is. If the CPU can take towards 65 then it gives us quite a bit of room before there may be problems.

Pfft.. I've seen some of the old Socket A chips running at 80C+ ! These things love the heat! :D

Stop being a wimp.. 45C is nothing! :p

Found the Si97 better than the Gigabyte, even with a low rpm fan at 800.

odd, i tried tha sl97 and it performed consistantly worse than the g-power pro. various review sites on the net show the g-power to be better too
