Hi all,

My first time on the forums, so hello to you all. I have a Galaxy DXX 1000w Enermax PSU which i've roughly had for about 5 yrs now and works perfectly fine.

I was just wondering if I upgraded my motherboard to say a FX6 SPEC OPS" AMD FX-6 6100 3.30 @ 4.40GHz Overclocked Bundle and with the latest types of graphics cards, would the PSU as mentioned above be ok to run these or could I damage components?

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

The PSU would be way overkill but it is a reliable PSU which is nice.
I would stay well clear of AMD unless you do a million pieces of encoding.

Look at the Ivy i5's with Z77 motherboard.

If you give us a budget we can spec you a system. I take it you have HDD's and DVD-RW's that are SATA?

Enermax is a good make, so I don't see it failing soon. Though if you feel you want a new psu they are now more energy efficent and quieter too.

A new one will last you another 5 years.

Your current psu is more than powerful enough for most new systems.

I don't think and is the best upgrade path. Intel is a much better route.

It shouldn't damage anything and if it dies of old age it won't take anything with it.

AMD faildozers aren't worth buying really mate they aren't. Your old Phenom will beat any BD out there at gaming.

A million pieces of coding?. I've got an old AMD Phenom black edition at the moment and never had any trouble with it. Yes my HDD etc is SATA.

what he basically meant is the bulldozers have an advantage in very high end video coding only. Every other situation Intel is better.

What reviews? Ignore the consumer done reviews and take a look at the ones done by people like Toms Hardware.

Hmm ok fair enough, but surly it's better than my old AMD Phenom x4 9850 black edition?

Yes, but a Phenom II X4/6 is also better than your chip- and in most situations, better than the Bulldozer. (Not to mention generally cheaper.)

EDIT: Plus you should be able to put it in the motherboard you currently have. What is your current motherboard?

What exactly do you use your PC for? Bulldozer has a lower IPC than the Phenom IIs hence why they perform worse per clock in gaming. The i5s have a much higher IPC, so combined with the high clockspeed you'll be seeing a massive performance jump compared to your Phenom.
