I’ve never had one of those fancy TN panels with backlight strobing so I’ve always been a little curious.
Reading around, some say that OLEDs have superior motion clarity but others prefer the TN.
Has anyone tried both and got an opinion on it?

Yeah, I'm using an OLED monitor now (currently the AW2725Q - 4k 240hz) but previously used a 240hz Zowie TN monitor (XL2546) with Dyac for a few years (from late 2018 to around 2023).

I always loved it and remember being so happy when I got it considering it replaced my original BenQ (and first ever) 144hz monitor I bought in 2013.

Weirdly I also really liked the thick borders on the monitor (I know slimmer bezels are the 'thing' right now) but it was great for the games that I'd play at a pretty much locked 240fps and use Dyac (i.e. the backlight strobing). It basically was my dedicated FPS monitor, running it next to a 1440p 180hz regular IPS monitor for everything else. Some people seem to struggle with eye strain/headaches from using backlight strobing, I was always fine with it on the Zowie monitors and never used it on a different model/brand.

I kept the monitor all the way up until around 18 months or so ago when I then swapped to OLED (to the Alienware 360hz 1440p QD-OLED). I'd bought the XL2546 in November 2018 (basically did an entire new PC build for BFV and got a new monitor at the same time) and used it for that and COD/Warzone all throughout COVID then after I got a bit tired of COD and BF, swapped to using it for OW2 and The Finals after that released - and it was basically my main Finals display up until I got an OLED monitor. I briefly used it as a second screen but the viewing angles for it were awful unless I was looking straight at it and it started to really highlight how much nicer OLED panels were to look at (and how much more useful IPS monitors were as a second screen).

From what I've read, the newer TN models seem a lot better than the one I had in terms of image quality/colour accuracy/viewing angles etc. and Dyac 2 seems to be another nice improvement for backlight strobing. For me, I think now it's really only something you should consider if you want a monitor that is absolutely only for competitive titles.

If you want a monitor that you can do 'more' with then I'm not sure I'd be considering one anymore.

It is something I would like to try at some point just to avoid wondering “what if?” Although with the price zowie are charging for their 600hz monitor I think I’d lean towards the AOC. I also want to try 4K OLED but I think I’ll wait for hardware to improve before making that jump. Thanks for your detailed reply.
