Olschool Socket-A time - Thornton cache unlock!

Built a few rigs with it but never owned one.. my first dual Intel board was a PIII 1Ghz EB setup on Intel STL-2, first with one cpu and a passive passthrough then another 1GHz when funds were available, no overclocking possible though :D

Was installing windows 7 on a socket A yesterday and boy did it hurt my patience.

All in all it took around 8 hours - faffing around with drivers in compat mode, patching updates etc etc.

At the end of it I took a drive image but am seriously thinking of a PCI SATA card and an SSD for lols. Obviously the CPU will be seriously bottlenecked but might be a good experiment for a laugh

Heh you've reminded me that I've got a 1U dual PIII up in the loft somewhere complete with RAM and CPUs. There's all sorts up there that are best left forgotten tbh

There's still a surprising amount of value in these old parts. I sold my socket a Athlon 3200+, board, ddr ram and two agp graphics card for just shy of £100 not many months ago.
