It'll be the usual deal where some dingus has mixed the chems that sterilise the pool and the ones that control ph and alkalinity. Number one no no but frequently happens.
 
Happened down my road a while back, someone stored chlorine tablets for thier hot tub under their sink, tablets got wet and released chlorine gas, they were all out in the street coughing their lungs up. Scary af seeing ppl in a very bad way for no obvious reason.
 
We had it a couple of times when I used to work at a swimming pool. We all had our respirators hung up in the plant room just in case.
It's one of the side effects of letting permanently hungover kids play with chemicals, or at least it was back then :o
