I sent an Olympus 70-300mm lens back under warranty as it stopped working after a firmware update. I have done several before and always follow their instructions but this time it just froze at the end and would not finish. I had no choice but to disconnect it and it then was not recognised by the body and would not work.Below is the reply I recieved from Olympus. Do you think they are right or should I argue this further with them.

Dear Mr Curley

Our Service Centre have advised they carried out tests on a couple of lenses and all firmware updates were completed successfully.

I also forwarded your query onto our Product Division at Olympus Europa who have also advised they have not seen any cases of this problem where the fault has been caused by either the downloading system or the firmware itself.

Both departments have stated that the most probable cause of failure during download is a break in the internet connection. Other common causes are miscontact between the cables or lens contacts and powering off or pressing buttons on the camera during download which results in the lens becoming inoperable.

They have unfortunately concluded that the fault was not caused by faulty firmware and therefore cannot cover the repair under warranty.
Kind Regards

Sounds like you have a case until they can prove you were at fault. It's reasonable to assume that their firmware update software should not 'brick' a lens whatever happens and if you're experienced in doing these updates it just adds to your testimony.

No way I would accept that. If a break in net connection could brick it then their software should not start flashing the thing until everything has finished downloading.
