Hello All,

Can anyone recommend a docking station for the HP Omen 15? Having real trouble finding any information anywhere online about this!

Mainly want to attach monitor(s), keyboard, mouse etc... also would be great if I could power the laptop through it also. It has Thunderbolt 3 port but how do I know if it will accept power delivery? Any experiences or recommendations!?

Thank you!

Dean

Typically if a laptop will charge over USB-C, then it will have a charger like that rather than a traditional barrel plug. I would speculate it's the same with Thunderbolt.

What model laptop do you have? Does it have a charger with a normal round plug?

In terms of peripherals and display, I've had success with fairly generic USB-3 ones. Handy for taking dual display outputs too. I do find my basic Kensington wireless mouse at work behaves badly via the dock. So I keep that dongle on the laptop.

Hi LuckyBenski!

Thanks for the quick reply!

Comes with normal charger.

This is the laptop...

I believe that it should power the laptop via thunderbolt, but don't want to fry the motherboard.

I know that you can charge devices using the laptop, so based on the below description from the HP website power delivery should be "bi-directional" see below quoted from HP Website ...

"USB Type-C video modes (Alternate mode): USB Type-C ports support adapters that can output different types of video such as HDMI, VGA, and DisplayPort, all from one USB Type-C port on your computer or device.
USB Type-C power delivery (USB PD): USB Type-C power delivery is bi-directional, so a device can either send or receive power. This power can be transferred at the same time the device is transmitting data across the connection."

Thanks again!

The rainforest competitor site (can't talk about them on this forum) is not very clear at all. Usually devices that support charging (Power Delivery) over USB-C or Thunderbolt have a logo on the port. Taken from http://thunderbolttechology.net :

So if you have that logo on your port, or your specific laptop spec lists it, you're good to go. There are several Omen models so don't get caught out, best to look at the port itself :)

We have some of those docks at work and the users seem happy, mostly running dual monitor setups.

You certainly won't fry your components - all these ports work to a standard so either it has PD enabled, and will work, or it's not enabled and the various devices will negotiate their connection. The dock won't deliver power that the laptop hasn't requested so you're safe in that respect - it just may not charge. If it does charge the maximum power permitted by the protocol is 100W. The dock may deliver less. Check your laptop charger for an idea of if this would be much slower than your current setup. In a worst case charging scenario you'll use more energy gaming than you add with the charger, and so the battery will still go down, just slower than if unplugged.
