OMFG MCE RUUUUULES!

I thought MCE was Xp home with a fancy media centre gui bit...?

Does it support domains and such like xp pro?
Not that i would need it to...
Nope, it's XP Pro with an extra application that can run on top, called Media Center. The domain joining capabilities have been disabled, but rather badly. There's a fairly simple procedure to re-enable that and any other XP Pro functionality that it prevented.

SLightly off topic question here but probably the best place for it, I want to get MCE on my PC because I want to be able to stream videos to my Xbox 360.

Would this mean buying MCE and having to delete Win XP and install MCE, or is there a better way to do this, or even a free program that I can install on top of XP that will allow me to stream video to my 360?

Thanks for any repsonse.

There are methods of insalling the MCE application on top of an existing Windows install, but it's quite a bit of effort involved, it might end up easier just to format and reinstall.

Also, this method might not work for streaming to the 360 (I'm not sure).

Ah right, hardly seems worth it just for the luxery of streaming videos onto my 360.

If I do get it though is it quite easy to set it up to dual boot in conjuction with Windows XP?
It *is* Windows XP. There would be very little point in dual booting.

Apparantly it's pretty easy, but AFAIK "out of the box" it'll only stream wmv videos.

Last time I looked into it, there was no way to stream Xvid, or DivX encoded media. There may be 3rd party ways round this now though.

May as well just wait until Vista comes out as apparently that has MCE capabilities.

Unfortunately though the latest Vista beta doesn'r work with non-US 360s.

Is there likely to be any more betas available to the public (for free) before the final release?

why the hell dual boot it!? it is just windows XP with a shortcut to a frontend optimized for TV. Its not like you cant use it in its pure desktop form any time you wish.

Because I don't want to have to uninstall my current install of Windows.

MC needs improving.

Can't Fast forward or rewing AVI's like a DVD player. Just 30 sections.
My Music is terribly slow.
Ability to insert external programmes/plug ins.
Easier configuration of IR codes with different applications
Eject button doesn't work.
Built in Xvid/Divx/mpeg DVD decoding and scaling.

plus, there's no "play all" option for folders, which is a REAL pain imo, need some kind of media playlist integrated

also the option to easily delete a video after playback is horrible¬!

but it is a nice interface besides that

How do you mean? if you click a folder you can add all to queue?

If you mean just a 'play all' media option for all tracks then yeah i know that sucks a bit but tbh ive set a button on the KB to open normal media player so i can play music like before

umm media portal doesnt work for most people and cant support two tuners

whats more it has a tendency to totally mess yer system
