OMG wtf

Just the price .. how could anyone justify spending 1700 quid on a gpu ...

EDIT : yea 2 grand inc VAT

It's a professional GPU with significantly better OpenGL support and pro levels of customer service included. Companies will pay for this if there's a few hundred K fees relying on it.

Surprised to see one at that price but there's always been a huge markup over the equivalent gaming cards.

I'd actually say thats overpriced for what it is. Unlike the quadro's there's very little done to the radeons to make the firegl, it's mostly driver changes. The 5850 iirc is based on a 48xx series card.
Also the performance against an equally priced quadro isn't as good in my opinion.

The Quadros are the same as Geforce chips, they just have different drivers and generally higher density RAM, higher price and of course specialist support.

Oh, and they're supposed to have high rates of reliability to run 24/7 at 100% load.

FireGLs and Quadros are nearly identical to their gaming counterparts in all areas, they just have different bioses.

That's why you can flash an 8800GT to an FX5700.

theres more to the quadro than the geforce, yes they use the same base chip but its enabled in a few different areas to allow it work better in the CAD environment it's meant for.

You can not flash an 8800GT into an FX5700, you can fool the drivers to think it is one but it's not the same performance.

Look at the thread by Jon (something or other) on this and you will see this.

Looking at the specs and the cooler it looks to be based on the R600 (HD2900XT).

EDIT: Sorry I was talking about the one in the op. I think you are talking about a different card.

My quadro fx 3800 in the works PC was only £650, its not even as high a spec as my gtx 280, only thing the same is 1Gb ram and the core speed is not far off the 280.

The main difference is it's designed to be far more stable and reliable than a gaming card, plus the drivers are optimized in such a way that it will out perform a gaming card when using certain CAD packages and performance drivers.

Viewing a High poly model in wireframe mode in 3d studio max might chug a bit with a gaming card but the workstation card should be as smooth as silk.

no I typed in the wrong numbers by the looks of it (it was late), I was referring to the v8650 which is based on a hd58xx. The rest of it still stands though.
