If you really believe that , you havent been around the IT game for very long.

Everything is cyclic and within 18 months if not sooner AMd will be battling it out once again head to head with Intel , in performance terms

Well in IT we tend to talk about whats happening at this very moment in time,, and that is AMD are being trounced by intel... and don't seem to have anything on the horizon, and lets face it when a hardware company has something "coming out" they let everyone know...

to be honest , Intel are making a really good year this year with Core 2 , but i would say AMD are being trounced , i just get this weird feeling they will have something on the horizon....

:) we can only hope Mr Frost ;)

AMD Will have something in the pipeline you know...

They arn't going to sit back and go WOW we did good with those SKT 939 chips, lets let Intel sell lots of Core 2 Duo cpu's while we sit back and
smile.

Looks like AMD are changing there tactics and are going for developing enviromentally friendly CPUs, in terms of power.. and are giving up on the speed war with Intel..

Fighting a losing battle in my opinion.. especially when it comes to bog standard desktop machines, I've worked for several massive companies and the place im at now has over 10000 pcs overall.. are any of them AMD? no.. have they ever been AMD? no.. Intel rule as far as desktop pcs go, and thats where the money is... theres 500x more money in bog standard desktops than there are performance pcs.. I don't think theres anything wrong with AMD at all, I had an X2 setup before I went to core 2 duo extreme, and I had no problems at all. I think AMD make great chips,.. but Intel are on a roll with no signs of letting up..
I personally think that quad core is going a bit over the top, especially as most games/stuff still doesn't utilise 2 cores let alone 4 (unless its server apps/linux) even the early benchmarks show the duo 2 extreme is still fastest in games due to faster clock speed... Even so its a bonkers fast chip.

I work for a large organisation too - at a guess they probably have a similar number of PC's. We've just moved our new builds over to AMD. It's a little ironic really - for years I've asked why we still bought Intel when AMD were clearly better. Now Intel are back on top we go and buy AMD. But it goes to show that thinking in IT is certainly not just "what's happening right this moment".

The problem with big companies is that they react slowly, and we're now only seeing the effects of AMD's efforts. Large companies now realise that Intel are no longer the only reputable player in the market and whilst Intel may be faster, AMD aren't far behind, and in terms of office apps, the difference is milliseconds. The reason large companies are now starting to go for AMD is that the PC may be only £50 cheaper, which to us is a no brainer. It's only a little more but significantly faster in games. However that power is wasted in an office machine. However £50 x 10,000 PCs = £500,000. Try telling the finance manager that half a million pounds is best spent on a bunch PC that opens MS word a few milliseconds faster.
