I cant fathom out why but after a short period of time one of my pc's decides to loose all its ip numbers, subnet mask, dns. The only way to sort it is by hard resetting the machine

Also random stuff will crash but I can never shut them down, all I get is a warning dialogue saying "locked by the system"

The board in that machine is an MSI 865p Neo2 platinum with an 2.6HT at stock
Anyone else had this problem with on-board ethernet?

I had a similar problem on my server - it runs on an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe/P4 2.4HT (Intel 875, iirc).

It didn't have a screen on it, so I couldn't tell you what happened. It would just disappear off the network, and the only way to resolve it was to hard reset.

I put in a Netgear PCI NIC I had lying around, and the problem still persisted, to my absolute amazement.

I hate to say this, but I replaced the motherboard with the same model again and everything returned to normal.

perhaps a reinstall would be the best solution. I assume u tried the obvious like driver/bios updates etc. try running in safe mode with networking, uninstalling any new programs since the problem started.

I havent tried safe-mode yet, I shall give that whirl and see what happens, this machine could do with a re-install as its been slogging on with the same install for a couple years now

Finding another decent board is going to be fun if this one has decided to go flakey :(
