I used to online game in the days of Quake catch the flag but more recently used my xbox.

Now that I have a decent PC id like to get back into it. What is the best way to get online PC gaming up and runnning?

I like playing with people I get to know in game

what kind of games? anything half life related just start adding people to steam friends.

A modem is usually a good start unless you have a router? :D

If the game supports in-game buddy lists then you can add friends "in-game" but not all games support this so it's game dependant.

Out of game it seems people use X-Fire these days. Kinda like MSN but for games and you can join your mates in the server they're currently on and see what your mates are currently playing and for how long in total. Allows you to block and delete friends who have spent any time at all playing WoW ;)

COD4 BF2 HL based games all good to start getting back into online gaming, i tried UT3 online, you just die lots so dont bother with that!

DoD: Source / CoD4 for online shooters imho, WoW if youre thinking about mmorpgs and dont mind missing out on life for the next three months.

I played Zombie Panic: Source with a mate on Vent so we could talk, was really great trying to find each other and hide from zombies, teamplay ;)

Best way that I find is with Steam based games. Get youself into the OCUK steam group and see who's playing what. If the game in question doesn't have in game voice, Im sure someone will have a ventrilo/TS server up and going.

As for joining servers, all ya do is load up your game and search for games with people playing in the main menu under find servers or something similar.
