Any idea what can be causing all my monitors to break within a year, 4x HannsG and 1X AOC. Is it my pc? I have had two different graphix cards in this time, and i have hooked my pc up to my old CRT TV, and that has been fine while the monitor fails. I used to have large speakers near the monitor which i have now removed, but a google search suggests that they would not harm a lcd monitor.

I am about to buy my 6th monitor, but i want this one to last.

I'd definitely agree with this, you really do get what you pay for. My Dell is 3 years old now and my previous NEC one is still working fine on another PC and it's 6-7 years old like Davefran's Viewsonic.

Also, just noticed that you said all of your monitors break within a year, so surely they would've all still been in warranty when they failed?

The first 3 HannsG's were replaced, but the 3 year warranty has ran out so its off for repair, the AOC is second hand and only cost me £12, but there must be a cause to this rather than brand? The 15 inch AOC was fine for a while, but quickly got worse. I'll ask the repairers of course.

Have you been getting them replaced under warrenty? Please tell me you have.

Well, do you have a hostory of other electrical goods in your house dieing? If so maybe you've got a bad supply. Otherwise you've been extremely unlucky or it's just the quality of the brands you've been buying.

Dell 30" here, had it now for 6years and is still as good as new.
No it isn't. The backlight will have degraded, there is no way in hell that it is still as good as new ;)
You just don't notice it getting worse because it happens so gradually, if you put a new monitor next to it you'll see the difference.

Anyway if all the monitors die within a year it could be the power net. Quality powersupplies tend to stabilize the output quite well so your PC might not have any problems with it, monitors might be more sensitive to it but that's a guess. You could look into getting a UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) to make sure you always get a stable input, they're not cheap though.
OC uk also stocks quite a few Surge Protectors but I don't think those do a lot more than preventing your stuff from frying itself when lightning strikes.

Do make the most out of the warranty I guess? In the EU you always got at least 2 years of 'free repairs', some manufacturers even give you a little more. I think both Samsung and ASUS monitors come with a 3 year warranty.
