is there a front panel say 5" or 3" so it acts as a on/off switch hdd indicator etc as im making a home server out of an old ugly case and i took the whole of the front off and the switch is embedded into the case, I highly doubt Ill be able to get it out safely

Case switches work simply by closing the circuit on the motherboard pwr jumpers (you can switch a PC on with a screwdriver) so AFAIK you could use any old "push to make" switch and some wire.

Some of them come in a two part kit, like a nut and bolt, so you could drill a hole in a 5.25 blanking plate to mount it nice and neat.

Never done it myself so could be wrong though I have seen some cool looking switches in a certain electronic supplier.

You need to join the pins together briefly then break the connection again, I don't know the name of the switch to do this. Push to make sounds like the connection stays made until pushed again.

The other options are not turning it off often, and using a screwdriver when needed. Or, perhaps better, find the option in the bios to turn it using the mouse or keyboard

I'm not really into electronics but my understanding was a push to make is just a spring loaded plunger which makes contact once when pushed and then breaks the circuit?

Ahh, good old wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_switch

A Push Switch or Push to make switch, allows electricity to flow between its two contacts when held in. When the button is released, the circuit is broken. So it is called a non-latching switch.

Other forms are push to break which, does the opposite. I.e when the button is not pressed, electricity can flow, but when it is pressed the circuit is broken.

They're called vandal resistant switches, push to make. Flush alloy looks rather cool too.
