im looking at a few laptops but find myself in a slight quandry

one has a 1920x1080 display, a gtx460m, 4gb ram and an i5 processor or I could pay 50 quid more for a gtx560m, 8gb ram and an i7 processor.

Sounds like a no brainer doesnt it, however, the slightly better one has a 1366x768 display opposed to the 1920x1080.

my question to you gents is, the difference in cost here is nominal but is it worth sacrificing gpu / cpu and saving 40 quid to get a better screen?

to have both these elements (i7 & 1920) presents me with a laptop that is more than I wish to pay.

cheers lads.

Which i5 and i7 is it?

Unless the i7 is a QM for quad, i.e . 8 threads then the difference is not much (as I've read it) that is a i5 and i7(non-quad) are to a layperson equal, with the i5 reporting better battery life etc.

Not very scientific, your last line indicates resolution is more important, is it?

Go for the one with 1920x1080, 460m is 10%~ slower than 560m, then upgrade the RAM yourself for less than 50 quid.

But if the i7 one is a quad core, then it depends on what stuff you're doing, but 1366x768 is terrible on anything bigger than an 11" screen.

i7 + 560M
At that res you could play all the newest games at a much better frame rate than the 460M at 1080

aye mate ive just recently drawn this conclusion having done some research about whilst I had a lull at graft this afternoon.

now I need to gather the willpower and not think about stuff I need to do around the house and click buy haha!

ive found a system with a gtx460m for only 599 so im tempted to go with that as this machine is mostly just got diablo3, but its come at a time where my laptop is on its way out anyway ive changed umpteen parts on the old war horse

QUESTION

with a 1366x768 laptop, if I plug it into my 22" monitor can I run @ higher res if and when I fancy desktop style work / gaming?

Yes you can, or you can upgrade the 460M later if its the MSI you are talking about where as you can get a new screen/cable (yes you need a new cable to move up) is much harder.
