I have the asus p5q pro turbo and would like to have automatic overclocking when i need it, like doing video editing, virus scanning, packing/unpacking rara etc BUT i dont want the extra heat and noise associated with a traditional overclock, plus i always seem to get BSODS so am looking for software based solution that gives me extra juice only when i need it. I have tried Asus EPU engine and when in turbo mode while virus scanning it actually took a few minutes longer! And if i up the CPU more than 4% the PC crashes.

The Asus EPU is fine and TBH benchmarking it versus a virus scan is a little pointless as they might well be limited by your HDD speed and anything else you might be doing.

A lot of the thing's you've mentioned are limited by HDD speeds or at least affected by them, when I OC'd my CPU using the Asus EPU it did improve framerate etc but I'd genuinely say you'd be better off with a SATA 6G card (which will most likely be limited to Sata 4.5/5 due to your motherboard) and a 6G SSD or a nice fast mechanical drive as currently your motherboard will be at Sata 3.
