Whats onboard Audio like these days?

HAve got MSI P35 platinum, and was considering would maybe use the onboard HD audio and sell my X-Fi, but just not sure what the difference is like these days.

Running Vista 64, and game with headphones. So is it REALLY worth sticking with X-FI, or on board audio pretty good these days.

I would jsut try one, then the other, but don't want to install any unnecessary drivers....

I'd also like to know this too, I use onboard on my 965P-S3 Gigabyte and might pick up a 7.1 Soundblaster Audigy to use with my upcoming Z-5500's, wondering if the difference will be clear.

I was running the onbaord sound with my P35 for a while as I couldn't get the X-Fi drivers to work. When I did, I noticed the difference tbh. Then again, I have a big beard and a turntable still. :)

yeh i still haven't opened by Auzentech X-Plosion, which i might consider returning if the onboard audio is that good. Well so far its seems ok, its definitely better than the onboard audio on acer ferrari 4000 laptop which i bought about 2 1/2 years go. But maybe because this such a big shift.

I would like more feedack aswell, i've got the abit IP35

Iv'e not tried onboard audio since the MSI Neo 2 platinum days.
That was a socket 939 board (nforce 3) with 7.1 channel audio codec RealTek ALC850

The sound on that was thin...no mid at all...bit like an AM radio.
My cheap as chips SB live would eat it for breakfast even on plain 2 channel stereo.

However, my daughter still has a Abit NF7-S and the sound on that is remarkably good.
That uses a RealTek ALC650 chipset whick is lower spec than the one on the MSI board.
I also had an ASUS A7N8-Deluxe which is very similar to the NF7-S, and the onboard sound on that was not good as it seemed to pick up crackles from the LAN socket.

It would seem it's the way the chip is implemented into the board that makes the difference.
I would also be intterested to hear what newer boards are like.

I find the onboard on the p31-s3l to be fantastic - I can definately tell the difference from the Karajan on my nf4 board, which was meant to be the nuts.

Unless you're into cubase et al, or have £234234345 monitors, I really don't think you'll notice the difference :)

And the performance really doesn't make much difference - I doubt moving to a soundcard would save more than 1 or 2 fps with todays chips.
