Ok so i'm fixing a PC for someone at work. It seems as though the graphics port on his motherboard as gone. It seems this way as there's no picture output whe i connect the monitor and the only way to get one is by putting another graphics card in and connecting monitor to that.

his Pc is an old Gateway, it does have core 2 but a 4300 running at 1.8ghz. The PSU looks low and has only got 2 molex power coming from this. One is to the dvd drive and i have the other currently going to my old X1800XT card (though this needs 2) just so that i could reinstall windows 7 for him.

As the PC is only for the kids has he says he has a laptop, what would be the cheapest solution to get this up and running. I'm guessing best just to get a cheap graphics card and he can connect his monitor to that.

So what would be the cheapest card so that he can have windows 7 running. Has to have the old monitor pluggin as i'm assuming his monitor wont have dvi attachment.

thanks in advance....

Hi there,

Something like a HD 5450 would be a good bet - they are pretty cheap (£24) and offer HD video decoding and basic gaming ability (for older or less demanding games). They also don't use much power (maximum of 18W) so it won't stress the PSU much.

Yeah thanks guys. Would have just got any off flebay but with me doing it for someone who hasn't much clue about PC's when it comes to saying it's going to cost X amount extra due to needing this part i always feel like they think i am just trying to get more money from them.

Will get that and then least can show him reciept and warranty etc. thanks for replies ;)

Thanks guys, the HIS one it is then. thanks to everyone involved and once again thanks to Overclockers forum. Doesn't matter how much you know, an opinion is always helpful, thanks :)
