Onboard graphics driver and discrete card

On a motherboard with an on board graphics chip that also will accept a discrete card will it cause a conflict if I install the drivers for both cards? Onboard would be ATI and discrete nvidia. I was thinking of running to start with on the onboard and then adding a discrete card later. Is it just a matter of installing the new card or would I have to uninstall the onboard drivers and disable the onboard gpu befor installing the discrete card?

uninstall the onboard drivers so there is no conflict.
