Onboard network card

Hi all,

I've not long had a new PC that has a ASUS Sabertooth motherboard. When I was discussing my options with the sales guy I asked if I needed a dedicated network card as I use my PC for gaming and streaming. He said that the onboard network card would be sufficient.
Now since I've had the new PC I've had intermittent network problems i.e. my internet connection drops for a second and then comes back (I'll click on a webpage and I'll get an error screen saying I have no connection, try again a moment later and it'll be fine). I've never had this issue before on my old PC, my broadband connection in fact is very good, and download speeds are brilliant.

Is this likely to be an issue with my network card? As an aside, are the "gaming" newtork cards worth the extra dough?

Thanks in advance

I've had this on my laptop with a realtek onboard card, it was the drivers for it causing it. I'd look and see if they're any newer drivers from the netowrk card manufacturer.

I'm not clued up on the gaming nic's so can't comment there i'm afraid.

Snake oil. Get a good quality NIC if you wanna be pedantic, like an Intel.

Id wager a steak dinner it's a driver issue.

Dedicated network cards only really come into their own when doing large internal transfers.

As people have said, don't get a gaming network card, they are just like the 'monster' power cables that cost a fortune but have no real impact beyond what a £30 intel pro/1000 NIC can do (which come highly recommend if you do ever want to get a new NIC).

Try updating your drivers and see if that helps
