Onboard sound - DS3 - mic not working properly

The mic test in the Realtek program (for stereo mics) detects input on my microphone if it's plugged into the back or front (set to AC-97) mic inputs.

Windows audio panel gives no volume control over the mic nor any mic boost.

The audio setup wizard in Windows to test audio hardware also sees input on the microphone but the microphone setup in Battlefield sees no input so I'm assuming that perhaps it's purely looking for the Windows audio device microphone input?

Whatever, has anyone managed to sort out and use a microphone with the built in audio (realtek) on the DS3?

Cheers...

...or am I better off just getting an internal sound card and disabling the on board audio...?

You actually used the Realtek control panel?

I have but hadn't included the mic in the playback section of the mixer since it's not a playback device... Will check again.

I might still get a new card anyway - this machine is my sons and I will be building a new rig for myself soon so could get the X-Fi early for myself and give him my old Audigy.

Anyway, thanks for that, will try and let you know if it still doesn't help...
