Onboard Sound faulty

I have a Gigabyte motherboard GAM61SMES2 and the onboard Audio will not work, I installed XP with SP3 and it won't work. I could RMA the board but was thinking of picking up a cheap soundcard to use instead.

How would that compare to the 883 Codec chip on board the Gigabyte?
