I currently have onboard sound which I plug my headset into it. Was tempted to upgrade and get a sound card, not expensive ones say £30 for a card or not bother.

I only use pc to play fps games and watch the occasional movie, use spotify. I've got Logitech speakers also..

Are they worth it?

what board? onboard sound is pretty decent these days,i had a xonar dx it was ok but I had to constantly tweak the settings to get the best sound from it,gaming/watching tv ect

onboard I can just set and forget, upto you though idk if a cheap card would be any better than the onboard? more expensive would be

To expand on wazza said with regards the motherboard, what headset are you using as if its a usb one you shouldn't really notice too much difference if its a modern motherboard but if its a half decent set of headphones that would benefit from a headphone amp then a cheap and chearfull £20 to £30 soundcard may make it a worthwhile investment

Currently use a Realtek ALC889, it falls just shy of my xfi pro but that's currently refusing to work at the moment typical of creative.
I use to be a huge advocate of 3rd party sound cards but the realtek is rather quite good these days!

same here. i'm more than happy with it and it's much better than the ALC888 which was in my last mobo. that was bloody terrible so had an audigy2 pci card in there. when i got a new board with no pci slot, i thought i'd have to fork out for a new pci-e card but i didn't have to.
