Onboard sound problem

Hi guys,

I built my first Pc early last year by reading all your great information on this forum and everything has ran like clockwork till this week, so I am hoping somebody can point me in the right direction with this problem.

Firstly, I dont really have much knowledge of the real workings of a computer so I will probably miss out obvious things but this is my problem and thoughts so far.

computer spec:

intel i5 750
gigabyte p55a-ud3r
ati 5770

Problem : The sound through my motherboard has always been good, if not fantastic, till last week. It now crackles consistently and then when my processor is working the music stutters, slows down or sometimes very briefly stops.

I am pretty sure I hadn't downloaded any updates for any drivers which may have caused this so the first thing I did was to update the realtek audio driver. No change. I then updated the ATI drivers to 11.5 and downloaded the windows 7 service pack 1. Once again no change in the sound but then a program which I use for work would get the black screen of death and from an early experience when I first started using the computer I put this down to the new ATI drivers. I then went back to the previous ATI drivers and the program now works fine. So here I am with corrupt sound and no idea what to do next.

I have no idea what flashing the bios does and I have read it can be pretty disastrous if you dont know what you are doing and I have no idea if this could be related to the problem anyway, so I have left that alone. I have also read that it could be the motherboard on its way out but I have no idea how to test for that either. Maybe I could just buy a soundcard that would work over the top of the onboard one, but once again??????

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it,

cheers

Could be your speakers, mine went stuttering into the bin ;)
If no better idea comes id try...

OcUK Value 5.1 PCI Sound Card [Sc012]
£8.99 inc VAT

My first suggestion would be to do a System Restore to a few weeks back. Or a week at least to see if that fixes it.

If that fails, I'd try uninstalling your sound drivers and using the original driver installation CD that came with your computer when you purchased it.

Go for a standalone PCI soundcard like the one suggested by lemin and disable your motherboard onboard sound.

See if that sorts it, probably best to have standalone soundcard anyway imo.

Cheers for taking the time to help,

I did a system restore to a point before the crackling started after the new drivers started giving me the black screen crashes but no luck.

looks like a new soundcard then.
