Onboard WI-FI Issue (Network Devices)

Hoping some Internet/Networking Guru can give me a solution for my Internet Connectivity woes.

Couple of years ago now I decided to build a PC but rather than fix the problem I just came up with a solution which has worked so far but just had issues that I’ve been unable to solve.

(Now I know an Ethernet Cable would solve this but it’s my last resort as it would need to go from 3rd floor to 1st floor in the living room)

Using Intel Wi-Fi/Onboad Wi-Fi gives me internet connectivity but as soon as I attempt to join any online game I have connection issues and my internet speed drops to next to nothing.

Work around was using a USB Wi-Fi Dongle to connect and then my connection is faultless.

Today my Onboard WI-FI Adaptors despite being “Disabled” and “Uninstalled” keep kicking back in and overriding the USB Adaptor.

Firstly I’d like to use the onboard Wi-Fi in an ideal world so if anyone has any ideas?

Failing that is there anyway I can ensure these remain turned off and to not interfere with my adapter which works.

Edit: I’m on Virgin Media (Shudder) and have a MSI Pro Z690 Motherboard - Wi-Fi

Thanks in advance!

As a short term thing, can you disable the on board wifi in the bios at all?

This should stop it being detected and taking over.

Do you get the same issues with the on board wifi if you do a speed test or is it just purely gaming?

What's the signal strength like? is it possible to move closer for testing?

Is there any other devices on the network or are you connecting directly to the SH? (what model SH do you have? is it in router or mode?)

I’ll give that a go later on when I’m able to, to see if it resolves the issue.

I did think that but wondered if there was a workaround without having to go to that extent.

Signal Strength is Maximum 5 Bars… such a strange issue!

Let’s say I am downloading a game I would get healthy download speeds but if launch an online game (BF5, CSGO) my download speed plummets to nothing and my connection in game lags out, comes back, lags out and comes back before completely disconnecting.

No issues with the cheap USB Wi-Fi when the On-Board isn’t trying to override it.

Just 2 iPhones and 1 TV.

Not sure of the Router Settings - It’s Virgin Hub 3 but once able to in a couple of hours I’ll try look into this but used to run a PS4 Pro on Wi-Fi without issues.

Have you tried updating the Intel wifi drivers?

Has the Intel card done this since you had the board or is it a thing that started happening over time?

Do you have a spare HDD\SSD you could try and do a clean install of Windows on?

What about bios, id the bios fully up to date?

Sorry for all the questions

No you’re fine I appreciate the help.

I spent hours troubleshooting when I first built the PC a couple of years ago but since having no issues with the USB Adaptor I left it alone.

Previously I ensured the following.

-Latest BIOS
-Latest Intel Wi-Fi 6 Drivers
-Latest Motherboard Wi-Fi Drivers
-Windows 10 (Fresh Install)
-Windows 11 (Fresh Install)
-Power Mode High Performance
-Device Manager (Selecting do not save power etc)

Then I just gave up as I had limited time to play Games anyway, found myself Troubleshooting more than playing.

Edit: It’s done it from day one being a new build, was concerned faulty motherboard? But it does Connect as it should very strange.

It was built and I left it alone as I always thought I’d just go to the effort of Hardwiring it.

Have you tried disabling IPV6 on the wifi card? I've seen this cause some wired issues.

If its done it from new then it could be an issue with the Nic and not able to sustain the performance when being maxed out.

Is there any power saving settings in the bios at all that could be causing any issues?

It’s certainly strange!

So being Connected to Intel Wi-Fi 6AX201 160MHZ - Speedtest gives results of 163MB Download, 25.56 Upload and Late of 78.

I open CSGO and load into the match and instantly get “The Remove Host Stopped Receiving Communication’s and Clossed the Connection”

This isn’t just with CSGO it applies to any online game.

Disabled IPV6 and managed to be in there 20 seconds before receiving the same message.

Disable it all and fire up my trusty £4 Amazon USB Wi-Fi Adaptor…

Speedtest 50Mb Download 26MB Upload (It can usually do the 200MB Connection) but I have a connection which will allow me to play games online without connection issues.

Tempted to just go to the effort of tidily running an Ethernet from 3rd Floor to 1st Floor at this rate as there’s either Interference or a Defective Wi-Fi on this board.

All Power Savings are Disabled/High Performance even in Device Manager set the Intel6 to Full Performance/Never Sleep etc.. It’s a proper head scratcher!

I was too lazy to RMA the board at the time as it was fully built and it seemed a faff with the Photograph’s of socket, Serial Numbers but if I had, I’d have known if it was just this board.

Are you connected directly to the SH3 in router mode? If its in router mode does the SH3 have the ability to separate the 2.4ghz and 5ghz channels?

If so create a 2.4ghz channel and 5ghz channel rather than allowing the SH to assign it and force the wifi on the pc to the tghz channel and test, if it has the same issue try the 2.4ghz.

My son has a Samsung galaxy tab (can't remember the version) that would connect to the 5ghz channel automatically assigned by the SH but when it come to watching videos on YouTube it would repeatedly buffer every few seconds and unusable. It was resolved by separating the 2 channels and forcing it to use the 2.4ghz rather than the 5ghz SH kept using.

I have the SH4 so unsure what abilities you have on the SH3

I’m not sure without checking - Thanks so much for you input.

Sounds like it could be something to do with the Router Settings.

I’ll check tomorrow evening after work and general life duties :o … and let you know.

@ED209

Just to update - Been extremely busy! Won’t have chance to figure out the router settings until Sunday.

So your help isn’t wasted and I will get around to it and update in due course.

Thanks again

No problem at all, I hope it helps narrow down the issue if its not the wifi card itself.

Post back when you can\ready
