Hi all, I'm upgrading my PC soon with this motherboard that claims to have an X-Fi soundcard built in. I had a Xonar D1 but sold it for a Xonar DX (no PCI slots on new mobo). Now my question is should I have bothered with the Xonar DX or is the built in X-Fi good enough?

I think the SupremeFX X-Fi 2, has an actual X-Fi chip, whereas the SupremeFX just uses X-Fi software. The Maximus IV Gene, I would expect will have better onboard sound than a lot of other motherboards, but I doubt it will be as good as the Xonar D1/DX.

Sound cards are more than just a chip on a circuit board. There are many components that are there to produce better sound quality, that just don't exist on a motherboard.

Whether the SupremeFX X-Fi 2 will be good enough for you, might depend on what speakers and/or headphones you use. Also, only your own ears can decide.

The DX will be a lot better that the onboard X-Fi. Even a measly DG would be. Whether you notice a difference on not depends on your speakers/headphones.

Thanks guys, I've got the NS1000 headphones and Edifier S330D speakers. I think I'll just keep the DX then because it's better :) Also I think it's kinda strange, it's an Asus motherboard so you'd think they'd use their own xonar chip instead of one from creative

Just picked up a Dx from a Purple shirted shop :/ But it's a good improvement over the audio from an Asus p67 sabertooth.
