well without the case this is probably best you could do:

OcUK ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail - £59.99 (£70.49)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) - £31.99(£37.59)

Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail - £46.99 (£55.21)

Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £64.99 (£76.36)

Sub Total : £203.96
Shipping : £8.25
Total :£249.35

what does everyone else think?

I think WarBird has nailed it, for £250 that is about the best you can do. You'd really need about £350 before the next step-up occurs and you can get either a 2900pro or 8800GT. :)
