one core hotter

i have just installed a corsair h5o water cooled cpu cooling system and one core was running hotter that the rest (quad) about 10c more, so i re applied some artic silver and it is still way hotter, the processor is nearly new. when i put it under load prime95 after about 10 mins the temperatures even out and the difference is only about 3-4 degrees c .. i have it on now and the temps are core 1 26c// core 2 25c// core 3 22c// core 4 37c thats 15c higher,,, whats the crack// what can you advise please

It is perfectly normal for some cores to run hotter than others.

Both of the i920's I have here are like this.

In saying that though, if the difference between temps are huge like 15c or something like that, it is more than likely a bad mount with your cooler that is causing it.

When I had my chip under air, I had a 10c difference between the 1st and 4th cores, but I removed my TRUE, re-applied TIM and fitted the cooler again, and the temps only have a 5c difference now.

Just remember when fitting your cooler to tighten the screws in a criss-cross pattern so that the contact pressure is spread-out evenly.

It tells you in the H50 instructions how you should tighten up the mounting screws iirc.

cheers i just run prime95 again for 5mins and the temps were no more than 2c between all four cores it is just at idle there is a big difference // i will remount it again i did the screws in a criss cross pattern to make sure it was even, but can you tell me what iirc means please thanlks for the advise

Was that just idle temps? Just wondered as i know my one of my i7s cores was getting quite high compared to the others, but then i realised the apps/games i was using at the time were just mainly using that one core. My cores at idle now are showing a 6-7 degrees difference from the lowest to the highest, nothing really worth reseating for. Also as you've said, in prime the temps are basically the same (about 1-2 degrees difference).

I'd just make sure that you give all the other cores compliments and tell them there just as hot as the other core.

My 920 D0 -
39 - 36 - 40 - 35 @3.8GHz idle
Have had 7C difference on a Q9550 before, reseating wouldnt make a difference =[

As long as its safe at load temps I wouldnt worry.

ps, iirc means if i recal correctly, iirc ...

My current i7 has a bit of variation in temps as well, 58-53-56-53 at load, 31-27-32-26 idle, was similair with my previous q9550 and q6600, even after lapping the q6600 there was still a bit of a difference.

Out of interest how did you apply the thermal paste? blob, line, spread? did you clean the pre-applied stuff off properly?

There is always a bit of variation in temps between the cores.
Large differences are most likely due to a bad mount but small variances to 7 degrees or so are normal.

You have to remember that the diodes used for the temp readings are there to shut down the CPU when it is too hot, not to give an accurate temp reading across a wide scale.

My I7 is usually 76-72-72-68 when clocked at 3.8 Ghz. The differences arent too great, though I dont know if the 76 degrees should be any cause for concern.
