Long story short, I've got a placement interview that is an hour by car, or an unfeasible 4.5 hours by bus/train, to get there at 9am.

My flatmates have said its okay for me to be covered on his car. Does anyone have any recommendations for what company to use?

Also, is it okay for me to have my own policy on his car for that day, or does he have to be on it? Or can there not be 2 insurance policies for 1 car?

He's going to be calling his own insurance company to see the costs of putting me on for the day, but I can see that being more expensive than roughly £50 that I have been quoted for that day on his car.

Im not really sure on the legalities of the situation. Thank you in advance.

One day is a rip off and very restrictive. Certainly better going through his existing insurer.

We shall be giving them a call tonight, so hopefully it will be okay. I was under the impression that it was expensive due to admin fees and all that rubbish.

Have you considered renting a car?

I haven't no as I'm 20, do you not have to be 21?

Since you are 20, you won't be able to get one day cover.

He will if he does it through his friend's insurance company. I'm 19 and I've done it many times with a variety of cars from periods of 1 day to 4 weeks. It's a great way to drive stuff you wouldn't be able to normally.

When I was with Admiral they were happy to add a driver for a week which cost a £20-30 premium, I don't know if it has changed recently but I was never charged an admin fee. I'm now with 'only young drivers' and they added my girlfriend for the remainder of the policy which must have been around 6 months and charged a £30 admin fee for it, no increase on the policy.

Hopefully his insurer will sort it without costing too much, I remember looking at 1 day insurance and struggled to find anyone to do it being under 25.

Thanks for the replies everyone. We sorted me as an extra driver for the week (didn't do 1 day) for £45. A little expensive but it seemed simpler instead of getting other insurance sorted.

I've added my friend to my car a couple of times recently on my Admiral policy and it's cost £25.50 for a week each time (he's 23 years old and my car is obviously quite high risk).

I've used dayinsure (I think is what they were called anyway) and thought eh price was. Rey reasonable and the service very good, but then I'm 35 so that will have an impact on the cost and availability. You may find that day insurance isn't available for you because of your age, or the cost may be restrictive.

its surprising how difficult it can be just to borrow some ones car, especially if you're young. I use to add cars to my admiral policy for a week but they use to kick up a fuss if the car was already insured elsewhere.

It was just annoying having to jump through hoops to try and use a car legally for a short period of time. especially when non of the short term cover companies would even consider you.
