one for failing in prime

hi all

I'm currently trying to get 3.5GHz out of my Q6600 G0 stable.

my current settings our

389X9
Vcore CPUz = 1.408
temps on prime small fft 61,61,56,56
memory running at 778, at stock timings of 5,5,5,18

now I ran it for 3-4hr's today at these setting using on small FFT with my memory slacked right off (as far as they could go)

I then tightened the timings back to stock ran bend, now after about an hour core 3 fails, but the rest are fine, no lockups, no BSOD.

I'm running small FFT now to see if it does the same.

is this pointing to a memory problem?? or should i add a notch to the Vcore in the BIOS

EDIT: it sames to be failing on small FFT as well, so i think i might back it off a touch as test the stability of a slightly lower clock, then more onto 3.5GHz tomorow

I am running the ram at stock, 1.8V, its two sticks of 2GB ram and i have already given my NB a bit of a bump.

my temps where getting a bit high in the middle of the day, up to 68 on the hottest one.It was failing in small FFT so i think it needed a bit more of a kick to get it stable. which i wasn't willing to do. so i have backed of a bit to 382X9=3438 and the vcore is now 1.38.

temps don't go above 61 on small FFT

i have run 3hr small FFT and 2hr bend. will run small FFT overnight to check it rock solid.

just a shame as I wanted a nice round 3.5GHz

any ideas of squeezing a few more MHz without raising the temps up to much?

Improve your cooling and/or case airflow. To get higher MHz otherwise you're going to have to raise the vcore and therefore your temps will rise.

I thought that was the only way. i am using low end water at the moment so i cant expect miracles.

ran prim last night 9hr-41mins. but core 3 failed again after 2hr's and 55mins. temps didn't go above 61C

I got this error

What sticks of ram do you ahve? Most require at least 1.9v

this is my ram i use:

it states 1.8V

I managed to get it stable at these settings

378X9=3402MHz
1.392Vcore
max temps 61,61,55,55

ram running at 907.2MHz at stock timings of 5-5-5-18

8hr+ stable

i think to get it any higher i have to significantly increase the Vcore and i don't want temps to hit the 80C mark. I think this is going to be my everyday overclock, I'm going to upgrade my water cooling in a bit, will lap the CPU and see how far i can push it then.

i might see if i can tighten my ram timings two, is bend the best way to test this??

EDIT: Any suggestions of where to go next?? I was also thinking of backing off the Vcore till it fails 8+hr's of prime, but i don't think i can lower it much more anyway.

because youve overclocked your ram you may need them at 1.9v for full stability. Borth ocuk's modules in stock also state 1.9v

You can probalby lower that voltage. I have an annoyingly big V drop on my board of 0.1 so ive got 3.5ghz at 1.45 annd its doing fine at 1.35 real voltage

I will give memtest a go and see how it goes.

as for the Vcore I don't think I can lower it more than one notch as i know it was unstable at that level, failed prime after about 3hr's.

I don't think i have the best clocking chip in the world, but then again, the CPU block wasn't very flat (i should have really lapped it but i was too existed about my new build), and there is always the CPU to lapp 2.

I might give an 8multi a try to see if i can push it a little further, to be honest I have found it a bit easy to get this clock, i think i have only had 4 BSOD due to overclocking and I haven't had to restart CMOS once.

You sdhould download the non free everest software. You can get it to show voltages, temperatures of even ** hard drives etc and they can appear in a vista tool bar or down at the bottem in nice pretty colours of yours choise. Also shows other things about your pc.

but then i would have to pay... lol

i downloaded the trial on my laptop to see what was in it but haven't put it to use in anger yet. is the trail version the same, or does it have these nice pretty stuff removed. £18 hardly a lot.

will try the 8 multi trik this weekend see if i can get any further than i did with 9.

is it a good idea to use a 8X425 to test if it will still run at higher FSB, or should i just jump in at 3.5GHz??
