one for the tech heads

New manufacturing process for the existing Xbox 360 cpu.
Same functionality as the current CPU with reduced overhead costs and less heat/better power consumption.

Nothing to worry about, its not an upgrade.

What you forgot to say is that its been delayed to mid 2007, that's the new news here.

The article already says that so stating the obvious was not really required I thought.

Well the title of the thread doesnt give any hints and the news about the new chips for the 360 has been known for a couple of months now.

More cores per wafer, siliconlious :o

Reduced production costs and a opportunity for a reduced price in time then I guess plus 6 months on now

If MS know this is going to work out ok and I'm sure they've done the maths! they might be tempted to offer a price drop on the strength of the increased yields earlier than most people are expecting.

I hope we see 360's starting at £150 or less by February 07

I dont think the die shrink from 90nm -> 65nm will be reflected in the cost price of the 360. There's all the costs of the process of the new core, as well as getting Chartered Semiconductor ready to manufacture them too. It's not just IBM fabs producing the CPU, it's also licensed to Chartered Semiconductors to give MS a second source of them to meet demands... they already spent loads getting them up to scratch with 90nm with a huge engineering team from IBM going over there ... so a further hefty financial investment there if they too will fab the 65nm parts!

But that doesn't stop MS dropping the price anyway just to stay in the console lead!
