Hello all,

I drove to my friends tonight in Chelmsford, was about a 15 minute drive around 70mph. No problems, car didn't miss a beat.

When I got to my friends I gave her a call and waited in the car with the engine running, now when in neutral I can hear a ticking noise, it's continuous, if I revved the engine the noise was drowned out by the engine but didn't get any louder (from what i could tell)

Later on I noticed it again but when the car is in 1st (clutch down, not moving) it doesn't make the noise.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks all, will check in the morning.

I don't know if other engines have it but the VAG 1.8T lump in my car has a 'pollution control' contraption fitted and it makes a ticking sound at idle.

Is there any mention of such a device in the user namual?

I'd say the Thrust (sp?) bearing if it goes away when you press the clutch. But they don't usually tick as such. A ticking sound to me is a dodgey tappet but then that wouldn't go away when you pressed the clutch.

Not that I'm aware, will check it later.

Sounds like a clutch release bearing possibly?

Can you feel a couple of lumps as you press the clutch?

Nope, smooth as a babys bum.

A ticking noise like tappets can oftern be the injectors firing, however since you press the clutch in and the noise goes away i'm not so sure, clearly this will reduce engine load slightly but not enough to make a diff i wouldn't have thought.

Forget that, I didn't notice you say it goes away when you engage a gear.

It may be to do with the clutch unit (try depressing the clutch when in neutral, see if the noise dies off) or it could be something to do with the gearbox itself (does the noise dissapear in any other gear, or just 1st?)

Everyone knows what car Phate drives :p (It's a Saab of some description :o)

Injectors firing can normally produce a ticking noise, but if it didn't do it whilst the clutch was depressed that it sounds more like a clutch / bearing problem... It's probably normal and you just haven't noticed it before.

I wouldn't worry unless you start noticing a drop in power or a 'soggy' clutch etc.

I'm pretty sure it does.

Not sure, will have to do a little testing tonight and see what I can find out.

If it stops only when you put it in gear with the clutch down it's more likely to be gearbox related. Putting it in gear means none of the gearbox internals can rotate whilst the clutch is depressed. In neutral, the input shaft and layshaft can still rotate even with the clucth down due to drag on the clutch plate.

I get a very similar issue with my focus, but only when the engine is hot.

at a stand still (in neutral) with the clutch pedal up I can hear a rattle kinda noise, but when I press the clutch down is disappears, the car drives perfectly fine so I've never been sure if it is something I should worry about or not.

A clicking/ticking noise from a black box attached to the offside wing

This is common to all the petrol engines (VAG). The black box is a charcoal cannister. It basically recirculates engine/petrol vapour fumes back to the petrol tank and the ticking noise is the pump/valve operating.
