How do you take the image of the happy couple at dusk with an umbrella and the light flowing down on them?

I am guessing there is some off camera lighting that falls on the couple and then a flash firing up into the umbrella?

I think Raymond has done something similar.

It's the same technique, single off camera flash. Yup, just 1. It depends where you point it that's all.

Cheers Raymond.

Can you talk me through that shot please. I love it!

You mean how I came up with the story or the technical bit?

The technical bit is easy.

1 off camera flash, point it up at the umbrella, remote trigger from camera. So the umbrella is now like a lampshade.

Settings varies, I needed a tripod for this one but that's because i wanted a low ISO, because it is flash it is shot on manual.

The HARDEST part is focusing, it was pitch black so I had to manual focus, to do that I asked the groom to held up a mobile int he dark so I could get the focus first, lock it, put his phone away, get into position and shoot.

I used to do this with the Sun flaring in as well. It's good fun if the couple want to stick with it :)

You would love using a sony a7r2 for its manual focusing aids
