One Laptop - Wireless Broadband?

My girlfriends sister has recently bought a Laptop with built in wireless & wants to get broadband internet setup.

Can she use the laptop wirelessly if thats the only computer they have? or would it have to be connected by cable?

Laptop can be the only wireless device connected, no need for a cable. Although I find it a good idea to connect via cable first, get the router setup and secured then connect wirelessly.
