ok i just put heatspreaders on my ram sticks , now all of a sudden a my screen is not appearing on boot. it worked a few times and then didnt a few others....i fiddled around with the ram thinking that was the issue til i realised they were both in correctly and very hot....i check on a mates computer the code for the beeps and it says video problem. i figured my 9600 pro had died so took it out and plugged my monitor into the onboard graphics and still nothing but the same beeps!! whats going on. i did install the ram the wrong way around at first and the computer showed only 512 on boot instead of 1204 so i turned off and fixed that but the screen was working then. does anyone have any ideas or no what to do?

The Beeps sugest the video was causing a fault, if you have an onboard card, it maybe disabled in the bios in order to let your agp/pci card run, you will need to change this bios setting to get the onboard working again, with no display, you will have to reset the bios to do this.

Have you tried reseating your agp/pci card first ?

The best way to reset the BIOS is to unplug from the mains and remove the battery for at least 1 hour.

That'll do it.

How did you manage that? Have you checked the RAM sockets for physical damage? Maybe you could try another RAM slot if you have one?

ram sockets arent damaged, was tired and wasnt paying attention but the ram and sockets are fine....so i need to leave cmos battery out for an hour?....what i dont understand is why this would randomly happen

Could have done all sorts of damage that you can't see.

How the hell did you manage to force them in?

I think this will be a 'Trail and Error' fix, as we have no idea what you are doing.

i've explained what happened i made a mistake. rite the ram was not in the wrong way...the heatspreaders where making it a tight fit dur to them being attatched too low down the ram if you get me. i re-applied them higher. then they fit perfectly. they were not the wrong way round - no we have cleared that up...does anyone have a clue as to what has happend or why. please dont make comments such as - "we dont know what your doing" when im trying to explain..i dont want anymore malice comments... all my uni work is on here and i need it before the week is out and may have to buy a new board now. thanks guys

No malice intended (I been on these forums too long for that as you should realise)

When you say "i did install the ram the wrong way around at first and the computer showed only 512 on boot instead of 1204 it isn't going to do that with the heat spreaders on the wrong way round.

May have done if you shorted the ram, and have done untold damage or the ram was only half in the slots.

We can only guess at what damage you have done as you have now changed your mind, even tho you admit you where tired.

See where I'm coming from?

yeh sorry buddy....can i jus explain the spreaders were stuck on too low and ment the locks on the end of the dimm slots couldnt lock very well. the spreads both still heat up on boot showing current is flowing through. i am so lost...not a clue

i have had the battery out now for over an hour i think, i wil pop it back in and let you know what happens...as far as taking the battery out to clear the cmos do i need to do anything on reboot or will it go straight to bios screen?

Dude - please don't be so touchy. We are trying to help!

BUT - if you fired voltage through bits of your system that aren't meant to have voltage then it could have damaged something and be causing a problem.

Did resetting the bios work?

If not then try just one RAM stick in the first slot to see if it boots OK. If not, try the same RAM stick in each slot until it either boots up or you've run out of slots.

If it still doesn't boot then try the same thing with just the other single RAM stick.

If that doesn't work then check all the connections AGAIN - including the monitor connector at the back. That can sometimes come loose and give you no video although the beep codes are saying it's RAM issue sò it's probably a damaged RAM stick or slot that is causing the problem.

As for having all your coursework on a PC without a backup, you'll find most people strangely unsympathetic. Assuming the drive is OK - and why shouldn't it be then you can put it someone else's PC as a non-boot drive and copy the files off your My Documents directory or wherever you stored it.

well thats the thing it has always been booting...drives spining etc but no screen and the 3 beeps...im just putting the battery back in this second and seeing what happens....cross everything!

the plot thickens...the beeps have changed its still one long 2 short and according to AMI who make my bios "An error was encountered in the video BIOS ROM, or a horizontal retrace failure has been encountered" does this mean my board is offically poo?
