One machine to rule them all...

You are clearly under a serious misapprehension, student loans are intended to be used wisely on alcohol, drugs and loose women, not frittered away on textbooks and the like.

Haha, drugs aint my thing. And I have a long term girlfriend so loose women are out of the question. Which leaves alcohol, and lots of it.

Plus there might not be need for me to spend my student loan on this kit anyway.

Looks like I will probably go with:

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM (£129.24)
Logitech MX 5000 Laser Cordless Bluetooth 2.0 Desktop Combination (£93.99)
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (£370.11)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache OEM (£74.01)
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - (£343.09)
OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel Vista Upgrade Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2VU6674GK) - (£135.11)
Noctua NH-U12F (Socket LGA775/754/939/940/AM2) Heatsink - (£36.41)
Asus P5N32-E SLi nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - (£152.74)
Optiarc NEC AD7170S Serial ATA 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM - (£21.14)
Terratec Cinergy 2400i DT DVB-T TV Tuner (PCI-Express) - Retail - (£82.24)
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro 7.1 Soundcard - Retail - (£211.49)
Antec P190 Gaming Case - 1200 Watt Neo Link PSU (Gun Metal Black) - (£247.91)

Unless anyone corrects me or has any better ideas?

Might want to change the mouse / keyboard
Also look into the WD AAKS range as they're newer / faster

I like that case.
PSU is serious Overkill for anything imaginable that you could do, 1000% better off getting a case such as a Akasa Eclipse and a Corsair 620w. the p190 is massive, you won't have enough room for it in Uni accomodation.

Student myself, sometimes I wish I hadn't spent the extra money on my student loan every semester before getting the new one. Although a new screen, DSLR bought earlier this year and possibly soon a 2900 or an 8800gts might show me to be a liar :P

If you like it, why not go for the similar, cheaper and more sensible P182? (If everything fits, don't know about that stuff!)

PK!

If your a student then you are MUCH better off getting a C2D, then upgrading when the Quad cores drop in price IMO.

Well I'm in an interesting situation regarding work/education. I'm currently employed full time at a financial advisory company doing video and animation work. I'm employed right up until when I start college in October. And I'll probably be living at home for a year before I have to move so at the moment the world is my oyster...

I would get the EVGA 680i board even if it is more expensive. That Asus one has been having problems and WJA (resident motherboard guru) has strongly recommended against buying it.

You'll find that the Akasa Eclipse or a Lian Li case are better for airflow. Bung in a Corsair 620W like stated above and you'll be flying :)

I was a student up until a few months ago so I know what it's all about :D

I just know someone who spent all their student loan on toys and gadgets and struggled to even buy enough food.

Obviously its your call, but I suspect next summer when you want to go travelling you'll be cursing at yourself for buying that rig! lol, speaking as someone who spent ATI RAD 8500LE in first year leaving me eating baked beans for about 3 months :(

awww thats what i did last year, worked for a few months, bought loads of gadgetsm from 2 phones to a 1500 before vat pc :D love dit. now at uni but still living at home ( have to pay rent) so i still get the ocassional treat :D

if you are seriously doing video editing i might suggest a bit more ram than that, a mate of mine uses auto cad and needs 4gb pc6400 when rendering or it freezes :)

A mate of mine spent a huge amount of money on a widescreen TV, then ended up being a human guinea pig for some medical research to get some money.

But at the end of the day its your money so spend it how you like! :p

PK!

Hard luck dude! I know it's a lot of money to spend but I should be ok. As for going hungry, Ray Mears has nothing on me.

Just used the power supply calculator, and it looks like I might be heading over 800W... Any suggestions?

I think you'll be safe with a 480W / 600W (to be sure) PSU, it's not like your planning to put 9 HDD's in there like the other guy :p

No chance do you need 800w or over, the calculator used to be reasonably decent but maybe it is a bit off now. Put it this way, Corsair have demonstrated quad-core, SLi'd 8800series cards, watercooling and multiple hard drives on their HX 620w. :)

//edit just saw your last post, that makes sense now.
