Houston, I have a problem .......

If I install either a Opty 170 or a 4800+ on to my Asus A8N32 Sli moby, and then check within device manager, it only lists one core instead of two under processors. There used to be two listed, but no matter what CPU I try, when I reboot, I can't get device manager to show both cores.

also

If I check the temps, using the program coretemp, it only shows one temp, instead of the two core temps that it used to.

I have checked both chips out on another system, and they both came up with two cores within device manager. (Thus, both the OPTY and the 4800 are intact when it comes to their dual cores)

I have the most up to date bios and drivers, and have cleared the CMOS, but although it lists the chip on the post screen, the PC is definately only seeing it as a single core CPU, by the time it reaches to the desktop.

Anyone got any ideas, then I'd be more than pleased to hear them.

Cheers in advance.

Don't you need to reinstal windows to load the multi threaded HAL?

I understand though from my MCP that upi can upgrade the HAL from device manager but it is a one way street. You cannot downgrade to a single thread HAL. I'm sure someone can confirm this though.

yep, I would reinstall XP and it will show two cores.

Cheers for the replies. :)

Why would both cores show in device manager one day, but then disappear the next?

It's got me beat - I've swapped out cpus and been messing with this all afternoon, right up until now..

To say I'm confused is an understatement. When the PC posts - it says count =2 , which I assume means two cores. If thats the case, the PC is seeing both cores, but not loading them into device manager.

I think I'll bite the bullet and re-install anyway.

Update - :(

Just done a total clean XP reinstall, and after checking at each stage of service packing/updating/patching, there was never any sign of the second core within device manager.

Because I know that the two CPU's checkout with another system, I'm beginning to think that part of the motherboard is borked.

I've been at this far too long today - cheesed off and bed beckons!

Nite all.

Yer I would like to know too... thats a little worrying really lol

Are you sure that they sent you the right chip???

I don't own a dual-core, and I have no idea why it's happening, but I'm guessing that Windows doesn't seem to want to force an update of the CPU driver, no matter how many times you reinstall (except possibly if you nuke your HDD and do a completely fresh install, but I'm guessing you don't want to do that). Did you by any chance have a single-core CPU in there before going to dual-core?
When I tried the ACPI tweak on Baddass's website for my NF7, my selection in device manager stayed the same even after I reinstalled Windows twice. It only went back to the default driver ("ACPI Uniprocessor PC") after I went into Device Manager and changed it manually. I don't know whether this is a Windows bug or a deliberate design to allow people to force Windows to use the right ACPI driver even if their CPUs are new and not properly recognised by Windows yet, but, as I said, no amount of reinstalling would change that particular driver back to the default selection for me unless I did it manually through Deviceman, although, of course, all my other drivers including for the chipset were nuked when I reinstalled.
As I said, I don't own a dual-core, so I have no idea if having the wrong ACPI driver installed would make Windows not see one of your cores, but it's worth a try: try going into Device Manager>Computer and manually update to the ACPI driver you need for your Opty.

I think you may be onto something.

I phoned OCUK tech support, and they gave me an RMA number. I cannot be without a PC, so bought the same motherboard again locally to tide me over, as I have another use for it when the replaced moby comes back.

However.

I did a complete reinstall of windows, including a reformat, and on the new m//b installation, I have the same problem.

This is driving me bloody mad now. Just wasted a load of time and still can't get to the bottom of this.

Found the problem. :) :) :)

When I installed windows, there is a problem with this board, where if you don't have the parrallel port installed, it hangs the installation, by saying "This motherboard is not ACPI compatiable".

Like a dimbo, I disabled ACPI during a reinstall, but didn't re-enable it afterwards. DOH!!!!!

I'm just a little greyer, and more than a little older and wiser now!

Thanks for everyones help and suggestions and esp to manveruppd, who mentioned ACPI, which set the old cogs whirring, and alarm bells ringing!

I would look closely at bios revision myself - any mobo would have to mention 2 cores for windows to be able to see it ( I would guess anyway)

Advance control power interface or something like that.
