...is when im using apps like dreamweaver or ms word for example. Every time I open up I have to realign the windows to fill the whole screen. I hate the way there are 'holes' in the window layouts where you can see through to the desktop background. I was able to solve this in dreamweaver by saving the workspace layout but cannot find any way around this in other apps. Anyone else know a workaround for this? its just a minor thing but kind of annoying!

If you press the + in the top left it will open the window to the maximum size it needs to be, after that there's no point and it's just wasting space.

Why would you want Word to fill the whole screen? You would have huge gaps on the sides surely.

That's the best thing about OS X in my opinion.

yeah i do hit the + to run in maximised mode but all my toolbars and toolboxes dont neatly hide away they just stack up in layers and its very 'holey' lol

Its the way that the os works, I personally prefer it even when I use a windows system I want/have part of the desktop showing, mainly cause I use a massive res and it look a bit wierd when a4 pictures are stretched across the screen, and I its not working in WYSIWYG.

You need to get out of the Windows mindset. That is how OS X works and it is hardly a massive inconvenience to resize the window manually if required.

But surely it gets annoying if you want to resize it everytime you use the program?

It has already been explained by others that the green maximise button will expand the windows to the optimum size, full screen windows are not needed but the option to do so is there. I don't see a problem.

It can be rather inconsistent. If I open a two line file in TextEdit and press it then it maximises Windows style, leaving loads of empty white space.

I agree that floating toolbars are almost always nasty :)

The other thing you can do is have a plain background and then choose to minimize all other applications' windows except the current one. You can do this from the dock.

In Photoshop you can select a background image (i.e. the basic grey you get in the Windows version)

Haven't used Dreamweaver for ages, so I'm assuming (now that Adobe have bought Macromedia) that it will be in the new version (I hope) :)

It is quite an inconvenience when you have to do it nearly all the time, whereas Windows handles it with a single click.

My iBook only has a 12" screen that delivers 1024x768; reading documents, pdfs and web pages strains the eyes at any size smaller than maximised, I don't want the operating system to dictate what I want.

I can fully appreciate the idea on a larger screen, but both requirements should be fulfilled.

I do have to agree with the last said point. Due to my (rather poor) eyes, I struggle to read a PDF or even forums without them being pretty much full screen and zoomed in, on my macbook!

Get a bigger screen or use Windows then. Apple are not going to change their OS just to suit your failing eyesight. ;)

I take it you are aware of the ability to use Ctrl+scroll to zoom in on the entire screen and you can read even the smallest text letter by letter if needed?

Hello Mac Fanboi! *waves*

i too like the fact that osx optimises the max size for you, much prefer this than fully maxmised window in windows where there is a lot of space wasted.
