Hi all,

Not a good week on the iPhone front in the wicksta household. :(

Last week my missus' iPhone 3G stopped working. It has a blank screen all the time, you plug it in to the Mac and then it says the phone is in recovery mode - if you try and restore it then you get an Error 28. I've tried everything from letting it run down to multiple cables/laptops etc.

Roll on to today, I go to switch my 16GB 3G on to silent and I notice it doesn't vibrate or actually go to silent mode. The switch moves but nothing happens, I believe these switches failing is quite a common problem?

Anyway both of these phones were bought in July 2008 so am I screwed for getting them fixed/replaced? I was thinking about popping into the Apple shop in Westfield (Shepherds Bush) but I don't really want to go there if it's going to be a wasted journey as its about 45 mins away.

Feel for you mate. :( Seems a lot of people are getting this problem, (Error 28) no solution yet though hopefully there will be soon.
Heard about the mute switch, (hate the way some people call it the vibrate switch. Grrr.)
was continuing to use mine thinking it must be alright. Not using mine any more if I can help it.
Again all the very best on a solution for the 28 error.

As Megha says, ignore the 1year wmanufacturer warranty.

Ask them nicely as theyre just out of warranty and you ebing a good apple customer/follower for a while now would they please repair them free of charge.

If not go SoGa quoting on the basis of price/reasonable lifespan

Thanks guys, I've made an appointment at the genius bar on Sunday so will treat the missus to a nice lunch in West London. :)

Fingers crossed they will sort the phones out!

TBH it should be OK ... I had my old iPhone 3G repaired and it was about 2 weeks over the 1 year warranty. I did pretend to be innocent and didn't know what the hell was going one and acting all shocked about it lol :D

My mute/vibrate button fell off within a week or two and they replaced it pretty promptly with a brand new iPhone (I just set mine to erase all content and settings, popped it into the bag and had myself a fully boxed iPhone!). Swish. It was within warranty mind, but, the iPhone contracts last for 18 - 24 months, so you'd expect it to last a lot longer - they also offer three year warranties (with purchase of an extended one) so they obviously expect them to last a lot longer than a year or they wouldn't offer them if they thought they'd be repairing them a lot.

I actually had my iPhone swapped over for a good few times, generally they will swap it over if they can't fix it there and then.

I remember going into the Apple store just to query that the phone lost signal a few times and they just swapped it over for a new one. Even though the problem was actually down to the network but it was great of them to swap it over.

Well a small update - I fixed the mute button on mine, somehow it had 'unclipped' from the inner switch I think, I moved it at a strange angle and it popped back into a notch. My genius bar appointment for the other phone is tomorrow but I just realised I'm going to have to cancel is as I won't be able to make it and watch the F1 as the Notting Hill Carnival is on and West London will be a complete nightmare.

I'll make an appointment for next week sometime instead.
