I have the following HTPC connected to my ONKYO 706 amp

e2180
Asus P5B-Deluxe
OCZ 4GB (4x 1GB) PC2-6400 DDR2 800 MHz Dual Channel
Asus ATI Radeon HD 6450 SILENT EDITION 1024MB GDDR3

The System is connected to my Amp via the HDMI on the graphics card and i'm getting audio and picture fine through the amp. However, when play MKV files through VLC Player the amp does not light up showings its detected 5.1 etc audio. Surely the amp should pick this up just like it does through the blu ray player?

anyone got any ideas?

Without lots of knowledge of the setup, three things that you should check come to mind:
1. the .mkvs have 5.1 sound
2. the settings in vlc are to output 5.1 sound
3. the settings of your pc are to output 5.1 sound

You'll have to tell XBMC to output the correct audio stream. If i recall correctly you open the audio menu whilst playing a film and there should be an option for playback in stereo, leave that unchecked and then there'll be an option for audio output. I think on mine this cycles a dropdown list with options like analogue, digital, optical, hdmi. Just try them all till you get 5.1.
