Before anyone flames me, I am completley new to setting up surround sound systems.

I have looked at the instructions but "oh boy" I need some kind of degree to understand them.

I have a Samsung 7 Series TV with 4 HDMI ports 2 of which are used one going to my dvd recorder and the second coming from the cable box. I also have 2 HDMI cables which I have as spares.

I am ok with the physical connections to the speakers, but the problem is connecting the cables from the TV into the Subwoofer so that I get sound and picture.

Does anyone already have this type of setup? If so how are your connections made (From-To)

Thank You to anyone who can help.

DVD recorder and cable box via HDMI into Onkyo sub. Onkyo sub to TV by HDMI.

That should do you.

Done that 2 HDMI into HDMI1/2 and the HDMI out to TV but all the tv says is no signal no matter what HDMI channel I choose - both the dvd and cable boxes are switched on but I cannot get any signal:confused:

Cable box won't do DD via HDMI so connect that direct to the tv via HDMI, then also connect it via optical to the Onkyo.

Is that the same for any cable box be it Sat or Cable? The reason I ask is that I have another Sat box which I want to connect up. But I wont have enough optical ports for both? Drat, this is not good!

Not sure about the tivo box but the sky HD and the virgin HD box both need optical for DD.

My dad has a freeview HD box and that's the same.

I can confirm that the Tivo box does DD over HDMI, I have just got one and have it connected to the Onkyo HTX22 via HDMI and you can see the DD lights come on on the amp when the Tivo box is switched to the HD channels that output it.

I also have a samsung TV and mine is setup as others have described. You need the boxes plugged into the HDMI 1 / 2 ports on the onkyo, then the onkyo HDMI out into the TV. Turn the TV on and set it to the HDMI port you have the onkyo connected to. Turn the onkyo on and set it to either HDMI1 or 2 by using the input selector buttons, then turn the box on and voila. You should have a pitcure.

.

That's good to know, cheers.

Thanks for the heads up, got it sorted :D But it's brought up another question?

What happens when you connect say an extrnal drive via usb or you want to watch streaming tv. Is there anyway you can get the sound to go via the sub instead of through the standard tv speakers?

For that you need to turn on ARC - Audio Return Channel. Often means turning on HDMI Control (or whatever your TV's manufacturer calls it), which then allows the TV to send the audio back via HDMI to the receiver.

I've tried it on my Onkyo receiver with my Bravia TV and while it does work, it also means that the receiver doesn't fully turn itself off because it's always 'listening' for the HDMI signal from the TV.

Yep exactly that I had to disable all the HDMI return stuff as the onkyo constantly stayed in its "awake" mode. Although it doesnt use an awful lot of power its about 20W compared to the 2 it pulls in standby and I just couldnt justify that amount of power use given it would be constant.

The way I get around this is by connecting the USB drives to my blu-ray player, it seems to play just about every format under the sun via its usb port and has no issues reading big hard drives. That way its all already wired in for me.

Revival of old thread.

I have this onkyo system. I have hdmi wired from amp to arc on my bravia w905. I have hdmi power control enabled and anything else I can think of. I have picture and sound coming through the amp now but for some reason I can't control the volume with the tv remote like I used to (been fiddling with my setup moving cables etc). I used to be able to do everything with my TV remote, even switching the tv off also turned the amp off. I've lost that now and have to mess around with both remotes. Any ideas how to enable this?

try the sync menu on the w905 remote and go to the select device menu, maybe an update screwed with something.

I have same tv, its great!! and I used to have the older Onkyo version, excellent surround sound system.

I managed to fix it by just using a standard hdmi port? I managed to get picture and syncing controls through the arc port, but no sound?

Anyhow this way SEEMS to work. Maybe they wired the wrong port to arc??

Did you switch Arc on in the TV settings and Onkyo settings?
