Getting a set of b&w mt25's and an amp but which should I choose the onkyo 609 which is £499 or a Pioneer 1020k which I can pick up for £350 is the onkyo worth the extra cash? Will be mainly for movies but some music and like the idea of streaming music from pc which I gather the onk does but not the Pioneer, although I do have a popcorn c200 which will do the streaming side for me.

Any advice welcome

Cheers

Just to mix things up how about a Denon? :) I'm running a set of almost identical B&W MT20's from a Denon 2310 and it all sounds ace, the Denon auto setup is great to get you close to what you want. There's a couple of models that should be out really soon with better features (well similar to the 609).

Denon Onkyo stuff

Audition both amps before you buy. Much is down to your personal taste in sound reproduction, some amps are brighter, some warmer and so on.

Don't ignore either the Denon's or Yamaha's at similar price points. Although the Onkyo is extremely well spec'd for the price it would be difficult to match it without spending more on the other brands they are generally not as robust as Pioneer/Yamaha.

Onkyo's are liable to heat and HDMI boards can be a bit iffy, the 609 may have addressed this but just be aware.

You should be able to source a Denon 2311 for less than the Onkyo, The new Denon AVR1912 is similar in cost and worth considering, so is the Yamaha RXV671.

Pioneer is a little out of your price range if you want similar specs, but I would have a listen anyway. The new Pioneer VSX1021 is released this month and if you can find the extra cash worth considering.

Cheers guys ended up with the pioneer sounded a bit nicer to me than the onkyo and I got it cheap prob because it's eol I'll live without the extra features would have been nice but I can put my music collection on the popcorn. It's a joy to have everything running through the amp through hdmi and only 1 channel to worry about on the tv:) Sounds great ESP after I worked out I'd plugged the surrounds into the wrong set of rears. Bit of tweaking and I should be good to go.
