Hi guys,

You may or may not be aware that Onkyo have recalled this model, and will repair any faults outside of warranty, if you have an affected unit.

Essentially, my one stopped outputting audio 2 months after the 2 year warranty, and from what I've read online the HDMI board is susceptible to overheating and breaking due to the high voltage.

Anyway, Onkyo are repairing it FOC, but I have a dilemma.. how do I get the thing back to the repair centre without the original packaging? I could wrap it in 20 layers of bubble wrap and find a box suitable, but surely there are better alternatives baring in mind the amp weighs a tonne!

tl;dr Just a heads up and after some packing advice

Can you not get them to send a courier with packaging. I've had this with a faulty laptop before where the courier brought the packaging waited for me to package the laptop, and off it went back to HP.

Not sure. It's going back to an authorised repair centre, so not Onkyo themselves.

I was thinking of trying to scrounge a box from a local hi fi shop, but I'm not holding out much hope.

Mine did exactly this. Fortunately just still in warranty. However after a month at the repair centre, (Genserve), they got back to me saying they cannot replace the HDMI board. They simply can't get them supplied anymore. Apparently Onkyo have agreed a credit. Just waiting now to see what happens. As for your packing requirements I would bubble wrap it to death and find a box that roughly fits. FWIW Genserve organised the courier pickup for me for a small fee. The fee included the return shipment even though I never got it back! My understanding is that Genserve are the preferred service center for Onkyo repairs.

Hope you get yours sorted.

Interesting!

I actually had mine repaired out of warranty a couple of months back by Babber Services (official service centre in the south east).

I did have the original box and bubblewrapped the hell out of it, but they sent a courier to collect and deliver after the repair all free of charge.

Do chase them though, took nearly 3 months... Good as new once I got it back though :)

Onkyo had to ship a board to Babber for me ad only after I chased Onkyo directly. Service people were very helpful though
