What do people think of this? It looks like the best thing to replace my outgoing Pioneer 2021 with.

What do people think of Onkyo brand in general, it is not one I previously warmed to mainly because I can't pronounced its name !

Can't tell you (I've never owned one) a couple of their older models was in the news due to them using substandard parts & a few other horror stories has put me off them. IIRC Lucid or someone else here he on longer uses them in setups due to reliablity issues though that was a year or a couple of years ago, the latest models may have improved.

I'll stick with my suggestion I posted in your other pioneer thread. RS do demos as well.

Thanks, I have verbally agreed to buy a Sony DN1040 now, got my local Sony Centre to price match Richer Sounds at £450 so save me petrol money to drive to the nearest one a hour away.

I owned an onkyo a while back and it looked and felt very cheap, plasticky and sub standard build quality. It sounded ok tho.
The Pioneer will be a far better option.

Raymond, I'd wait a week or so till after Christmas. A lot of the local stores (don't think your too far from me by the sounds of it) will be having xmas sales on and you'll probably pick up a bargain. For example my local store had an Arcam AVR 360 at £600, and your local Cheltenham Sevenoaks has a Yamaha RXV-673 on clearance at £325.

I thought about that but to be honest my limit is £700 and there's nothing I can see that I like at £700 so even if it get discounted to £500 I think I would still pick the sony. Only the pioneer LX57 tickle my fancy but that's £550 more than the sony.

Have no real idea on Pioneers as they've never appealed to me, but Audio T in Cheltenham have this one Ex-Demo - Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K AV receiver

What are you doing with your old amp Raymond? You are fairly near me by the sounds of your service centre post?

That is an actual step down from my 2021, even the current 2023 is not THX certified, if I go Pioneer I would want the LX57.

It's just sitting on the floor at the moment. I've purchased the Sony amp, all set up now. The Cheltenham Richer Sounds didn't have the Onyko in stock so made my decision even easier.

Although, from the look of the units, it feels like a downgrade ! Which I guess it is compare to what the Pioneer costs at RRP.

Actual sound of the unit however is really good. It is very clean, very neutral. Bass is punchy and the sound field is immersive.

Yamaha RXV775

It's not as good spec as the Sony, less HDMI, and £120 more.

did it feel cheap because it was a cheap av amp? I cant say any amp i've seen that weighed over, say, 20kg, has ever felt cheap and plasticky.

I didn't mean literally right now, I meant after you are done with it once your new one is up and running :p:)

I haven't decided yet, I guess the option is either sell it for parts or fix and sell it. If it's a capacitor then it's a cheap fix, if it's the HDMI board then it's expensive.

I'll sleep on it and decide over the holidays.

I will flog it, just got to find out how much that's all and how I can either meet you or send it to you. I am in Hereford btw.

True but that would also involve driving 90 mins to the nearest Richer Sound so there is time and petrol to consider.

I got it from my local Sony Centre 1 mile from my house.
