Hi guys, I'm after a AV receiver and richer sounds have these on for £170 atm. I have a budget of £200 max (Receiver only) I will use the speakers from my old system for now till I can slowly upgrade to decent centre and sub etc.

Any other systems I should be looking at? as I can't even seen to find a review on this receiver just lots of 4-5 star ratings.

If you want to match or beat that spec you'll have to spend more money: Pioneer VSX921 or Sony STRDH520.... but I'd go with the Onkyo if I was you.

If you can stretch to £250 il be selling my Onkyo 605 end of jan. it's a good amp I just need more than 3 HDMI inputs and want network connectivity.

Well it's got 3 inputs and 1 output but it also has two optical inputs also if needed, Going to pop over to Richer today and see if I can strike some kind of deal with some speakers. Thanks for your help guys. :)

I would see what deals you can get on the 609. The 309 is a good amp for the price however i think you will regret not getting the features that you have on the 609. It wont be long before you get the bug and will want to upgrade again. Save your money and save for an amp with features to see you through the next 5-6years at least.

609 Advantages
1080i upscaling for ALL input sources.
THX Certified
6 in 1 out HDMI
Dedicated port for Onkyo accessories ie iPod dock
PC Input
You can bi-amp your front speakers (much better quality i find)
7.1 over 5.1 which allows you to bi-amp
Active subwoofer channel
Spotify enabled
Network enabled (wired and wireless)
Zone 2 output (ideal for outside, kitchen or bathroom?!

All that said, the 309 is a great entry level amp and im not sure what your needs are. Just thinking about if you plan to spend money on speakers later, spend some now on a good amp for them!

What sort of speakers would you recommend to pair with the Onko TXNR609 in a 5.1 configuration, keeping the cost reasonable?

I'm no expert so worth checking up on the avforums but I'd say you have two routes to consider

1. Go second hand, plenty of 5.1 sets on the av forums and you can get some cracking deals! I got a 5.1 Mission set inc floor standers bipolar rears and a massive sub for around £250. Brand new that would have been a good £6-700 worth of speakers. This means you can also upgrade easily in the future.

2. Get a package deal like this https://www.forumhifivisual.co.uk/prod.asp?product_idx=1765&imgstate=0. Only issue from what I've read is that it's harder to upgrade these systems and find decent compatible speakers to go with it.

Well got the 309 today, All set up. Got my sky+hd, ps3 and WDTV all set up all working as should giving the right inputs etc, Also spent sometime setting up my Harmony 555. Very happy as it's all working now as I wanted it to work when I got it all.

Just messing about with my WDTV now to get a better interface going. :)

Hi, just purchased a 309 myself and am very pleased with the sound of the amp - I would say that the Yamaha (http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/yamaha/rxv371/yama-rxv371-blk) was slightly more "musical".

I am currently using it in stereo with these http://www.richersounds.com/product/bookshelf-speakers/mordaunt-short/aviano-1/mord-aviano-1-blk

I find they are matched very well, I will then at a later stage move these to the back and have the aviano 6's up front http://www.richersounds.com/product/floorstanders/mordaunt-short/aviano-6/mord-aviano-6-blk

I see Richer have these reduced by £100 at the moment if I had the money I'd snap them up - a lot of speaker for your money there.
