Online anonymity 'dangerous'

Did you even read the article? It's about cyber bullying and how people are more likely to do it when they believe they're anonymous.

It's not exactly controversial. It's one of the reasons so many websites that allow comments show Facebook/google plus names.

I want to comment on articles but I dont have Facebook account, and I don't want to have my name plastered all over the net.

Unfortunately it became apparent that people couldn't be trusted when they had the chance to comment anonymously. Companies then decided that they could reduce the moderating issues by making people publicly responsible for their comments. If you're not happy with that then don't post.

I'm all for privacy and anonymity on the internet, but this really isn't a fight worth having IMO.

Does it have anything to do with Trump, Brexit and Twitter, probably not. It seems pretty directed towards cyber bullying of kids.

Is there, however, an ever more obvious issue with foreign governments apparently trying to influence politics for their own use on the other hand. Yes. You sound like you're grumpy that you fell for some of their smoke and mirrors. ;)

Its one of the reasons I used my real name on all websites. If I'm not prepared to be challenged to my face on something I say then I shouldn't be saying it at all.

It's sites like Facebook that peddle this idea, because for them annonimity is bad for business. They can't sell personal information which is fake.

But annonimity is the way to stay SAFE online. If people don't know who you are, they can't target you or follow you in to real life.

Why do people feel that it is their right to be able to be heard without consequence on whichever site they wish?

It is not unreasonable for some sites to ask for transparency via a Facebook or Google sign in. Don't like it? Then don't post on that site or just use a fake one.

People were scared that if anonymity was removed from the internet, governments would use that to target, control and influence you but as we have seen in recently, they can use anonymity to do that as well. An internet where it is fully anonymous without consequence could be just as abused as a completely open internet where details are plastered all over the place, just in different ways.

This.

Google, youtube and facebook, to name a few, have had a several year long campaign running to force children into using their real names on their profiles. That is the problem here. If someone wants to bully someone they're going to be using a FAKE profile anyway not the child ffs. And this pseudonymic anonimity is just a layer anyway. The internet is not anonymous unless you're using an actual anonymisation method ffs.

This is just part of the seizure of the internet, and they're using children to do it. The funny thing is half the people who will agree are using VPNs as an anonymiser right now LOL.

That's not how the internet works. Asking for first and last name, and publishing comments under that name is not ending anonymity. The child will be using their real name on their profile and the bully will be using a fake profile. Just because a first name and last name are asked, doesn't mean it's actually a real first name and last name. The INNOCENT person will be more likely to have used their real name and that is WHY the bullying can happen at all!

What happened to ignoring people? Most social media platforms have tools to mute / block people, why should someone care what some random on the Internet thinks?

Online privacy is important
