I'm looking to back up quite a few GBs of files. I would like to back them up online due to the price of HDDs thesw days.

All I have is word documents, PDFs and some JPEGs.

I was wondering what everybody would recommened. Obviously if its free that is all the better.
I have Gmail, can I back them all up with Google Docs?

All suggestions welcome. Thanks.

I have seen a couple of posts about free online storage in the freebies section at hotukdeals.com.

Most of them are expired now but they were giving away around 500gbs on different websites. Check every so often to see if another one pops up.

Here is a link to a 4.5gb free storage site, not sure how helpful but check it out.

What is your upload speed? Standard ADSL will take forever to upload 100's of gigabytes. Does your ISP not provide some storage facilities?

Andi.

I originally used Mozy when they had an unlimited plan, then switched to Trend SafeSync when Mozy went to capacity charging. Recently I ditched Trend when they stopped their unlimited option. If I didn't have a 10Mbps upload on FTTC then I wouldn't backup so much stuff (100GB+) or probably bother to move between providers.

I'm currently with CrashPlan for something like 5 USD/month. What I like about CP is that I can configure a backup set to be copied both online and to a USB HD.

Microsoft SkyDrive allows for 25GB free space. However, you have a lot of other choices as well for example Dropbox (2GB free), Live Drive etc...

personally I use dropbox for files I shall access often and then my NAS for less accessed files down to DVD-R for the last resort....it's a PITA but needs must

I'm only going to be backing up around 1GB of files so what would people recommend that is secure?

Dropbox is handy for that sort of volume but it's not backup, if you want backup then any of the many many services which use Amazon S3 as a backend would do, or roll your own. Expect to pay a couple of £s a month (literally £2-3) for such a small quantity, less if you roll your own...
