hey guys,

do any of you use online butchers... looking for some top quality cuts but unsure where to order from as i've never ordered from a butchers online before, ive all ways been to the supermarkets to get my meat

I get most of mine from http://www.macbeths.com/online-butcher.aspx.

Their beef is very good and their pork is amongst the best I've had. Chicken is fine. Sausages are good (their venison sausages are scrummy). Only things I wasn't too impressed with were their bacon and their haggis (too much cloves).
Their game is very good too and the customer service is very good.

They occasionally have 42 day aged beef which, while expensive, is well worth the extra - it's divine.

If anyone knows an online butcher which sells pork rob racks, lamb rib racks and beef short ribs, I would love to know.
Usually have to buy from three different places and even then lamb ribs aren't in racks.

Can anyone recommend me some good beef ribs for barbecuing please?

Do you mean from a butcher?

I've used these before

Perfectly good, however cut into single ribs, however your still looking around the 250gr mark per ribs.

Otherwise you could try the rosedevon link above, but haven't tried the before. But they don't cut it into single ribs, which makes BBQ much easier.

This is the sort of thing I'm after. salivating just looking at them.

why do you guys buy online? surely it would be much fresher and cheaper to buy from a local butchers, not to mention the fact that you would therefore not need to freeze most of it.

Convenience, chocie, price.

Local decent butchers don't have a huge amount of cuts.

Not everyone has a local butcher, and something that's couriered in a cool box is going to be pretty fresh.

i would think everyone has a local butcher, maybe if not their home then close to their workplace.

also asda, etc, also have butchers now, as well as places like makro, costco, etc.

you never get to see the meat before it's sent to you, which is something im wary of, also delivery charges, surely to make it worthwhile you need to buy in bulk then freeze it, which compromises the whole quality of it.

The meat quality is far better than you would ever get at a supermarket.

Butchers are also generally open when most people at work.

What supermarket butcher hangs meat properly and can trace back to farm. This is what's get with my meat box

Means I can't get to the local butcher without stinking the place up ;)

As for freshness there is a difference and nothing wrong with freezing. Even decent local butchers will freeze stuff.

yeah but if your buying quality stuff then surely you wouldn't want to freeze anything, and prefer to buy fresh every few days from a local?

pricing wise, what do you think is better, online butcher or independent or cash and carry or supermarket?

Local butchers freeze meat as well, freezing doesn't affect freshness.

Pricing wise well that depends what you mean.

Supermarket is cheaper. But it's not going to be hung 28days.
For me I'd rather spend the extra.
Online and local butcher, not a huge difference, just depends what local butcher you have. But again I can get a far bigger range of meats and cuts online. Local butcher would have to order many in specially.

Do you really think top butchers are going to send you rubbish, with their entire marketing strategy based on reputation and word of mouth.

might need to try them out then but the kitchen is being extended soon and probably going to have a much larger fridge/freezer, so i will look into them then, because would probably be ordering in bulk to save postage, cheers for the info.
